Offshore and Floating Substations: Insights from Berlin
Fernando Javier Sada , Grid Connection & Electrical Works Senior Director, and Irene Leal, Grid Assessment Analyst at BlueFloat Energy, represented us today at the Offshore and Floating Substations 2024 conference hosted by Leadvent Group in Berlin. This event brought together industry leaders and experts to explore the evolution of offshore substations and the path forward for green energy infrastructure.
Fernando’s presentation “Offshore Substations: Design & Standard” highlighted some of the most pressing challenges the industry faces today:
- The increasing scale of offshore substations, driven by large-scale wind farms nearing gigawatt capacity.
- Logistical limitations, as only a few global ports can handle the size of these large structures.
- A constrained supply chain for electrical equipment, which is extending lead times.
- The urgent need for standardized substation designs to streamline delivery and project execution.
As Fernando explained, “the key to overcoming these challenges lies in finding the most reliable, flexible, and standardized solutions that align with the demanding timelines of offshore wind projects. Industry collaboration will be essential to achieving this.”
At BlueFloat Energy, we remain committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring the successful delivery of future-ready offshore wind projects.
